On the Rank Function of a Differential Poset

چکیده
We study r-differential posets, a class of combinatorial objects introduced in 1988 by the first author, which gathers together a number of remarkable combinatorial and algebraic properties, and generalizes important examples of ranked posets, including the Young lattice. We first provide a simple bijection relating differential posets to a certain class of hypergraphs, including all finite projective planes, which are shown to be naturally embedded in the initial ranks of some differential poset. As a byproduct, we prove the existence, if and only if r ≥ 6, of r-differential posets nonisomorphic in any two consecutive ranks but having the same rank function. We also show that the Interval Property, conjectured by the second author and collaborators for several sequences of interest in combinatorics and combinatorial algebra, in general fails for differential posets. In the second part, we prove that the rank function pn of any arbitrary r-differential poset has nonpolynomial growth; namely, pn nae2 √ rn, a bound very close to the Hardy-Ramanujan asymptotic formula that holds in the special case of Young’s lattice. We conclude by posing several open questions.

The Induced Subgraph Order on Unlabelled Graphs
A differential poset is a partially ordered set with raising and lowering operators U and D which satisfy the commutation relation DU−UD = rI for some constant r. This notion may be generalized to deal with the case in which there exist sequences of constants {qn}n≥0 and {rn}n≥0 such that for any poset element x of rank n, DU(x) = qnUD(x)+rnx. Here, we introduce natural raising and lowering ope...
متن کاملInvolutions of the Symmetric Group and Congruence B - Orbits ( Extended Abstract )
We study the poset of Borel congruence classes of symmetric matrices ordered by containment of closures. We give a combinatorial description of this poset and calculate its rank function. We discuss the relation between this poset and the Bruhat poset of involutions of the symmetric group. Also we present the poset of Borel congruence classes of anti-symmetric matrices ordered by containment of...
متن کاملOn Differential Posets
We study differential posets, a family of partially ordered sets discovered by Richard Stanley. In the first half of this paper we present an introduction to poset theory as relevant to differential posets and theorems on the structure and combinatorial properties of differential posets, culminating in the explicit definition of a new differential poset. In the second half we focus on Young’s l...
متن کاملSimple proofs for duality of generalized minimum poset weights and weight distributions of (Near-)MDS poset codes
In 1991, Wei introduced generalized minimum Hamming weights for linear codes and showed their monotonicity and duality. Recently, several authors extended these results to the case of generalized minimum poset weights by using different methods. Here, we would like to prove the duality by using matroid theory. This gives yet another and very simple proof of it. In particular, our argument will ...
متن کاملOn Posets and Hopf Algebras
We generalize the notion of the rank-generating function of a graded poset. Namely, by enumerating different chains in a poset, we can assign a quasi-symmetric function to the poset. This map is a Hopf algebra homomorphism between the reduced incidence Hopf algebra of posets and the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. This work implies that the zeta polynomial of a poset may be viewed in...
